Kognitio debuts in Magic Quadrant for Data Warehouse DBMS

Marlow, United Kingdom – 26 September 2006 – Kognitio, a leading provider of solutions to business problems that require acquisition, rationalisation and analysis of both large and complex data, today announced that for the first time it has entered Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for data warehouse database management systems (DBMS)(1). This achievement underlines the strength and sophistication of Kognitio WX2 as an open and more mature and powerful analytical database platform for Data Warehousing than many of its competitors.

Published on 12th September 2006, the report evaluated ten vendors that have demonstrated the ability to offer an enterprise scale, relational DBMS that delivers the software infrastructure to support a data warehouse of any size. Vendors featured in the Magic Quadrant must demonstrate a growing customer base and show support for mixed-workload environments.

“The data warehouse DBMS market is heating up, with fierce competition from newcomers using open-source software and commodity hardware to increase the pricing pressures on this market,” said the analyst’s report. “Although this is a mature market with the full attention of large vendors seeking to make inroads with scale and innovation, smaller entrants often deliver a more focused, innovative solution.”

“We are truly delighted that Gartner has analysed Kognitio’s unique contribution to the data warehouse, database management and business intelligence market,” said Roger Llewellyn, managing director, Kognitio.

“Kognitio WX2 is a robust and elegant solution giving better performance on industry standard servers and blade farms, and it is perfect for grid and utility computing environments. Building on over twenty years of continuous development, enhancement and integration, the solution has attracted the interest of large hardware vendors with whom the Kognitio WX2 Virtual Data Appliance offering can be taken to wider audience. Furthermore, our success with leading system integrators and solution partners reflects the maturity of Kognitio WX2 as a viable alternative to proprietary hardware-based data warehouse appliance solutions.”

As a provider of a high-performance fully-relational database software solution in this arena, Kognitio WX2 is in the vanguard of new RDBMS solutions that are creating an inflection point in the data analytics market. Data analysis that was previously impossible or just too difficult to perform has now become much easier with WX2. Unlike traditional incumbent products that are focussed on transactional processing performance, WX2 has been designed around achieving very high performance in the analytical domain of data warehousing, in some case by as much as 20-60 times compared with traditional solutions. This high performance is combined with a much lower TCO mostly due to the fact that WX2 does not have to create performance-related indices and runs on non-proprietary, industry-standard x86 hardware. As such, Kognitio is continuing to redefine the analytical data warehouse market and to help organisations to translate high performance into lower operational costs and greater flexibility, thus allowing them to gain a competitive advantage from their data much more quickly and cost-efficiently.

About the Gartner Magic Quadrant

The Magic Quadrant is copyrighted September 2006 Gartner Inc., and is reused with permission. Gartner Inc.’s permission to print or reference its Magic Quadrant should not be deemed to be an endorsement of any company or product depicted in the quadrant. The Magic Quadrant is Gartner Inc.’s opinion and is an analytical representation of a marketplace at and for a specific time period. It measures vendors against Gartner Inc.-defined criteria for a marketplace. The positioning of vendors within a Magic Quadrant is based on the complex interplay of many factors. Gartner Inc. does not advise enterprises to select only those firms in the Leaders segment. In some situations, firms in the Visionary, Challenger, or Niche Player segments may be the right match for an enterprise’s requirements. Well-informed vendor selection decisions should rely on more than a Magic Quadrant.
