Kognitio version 8.2.1 is now available for Hadoop and MapR

by andym » Thu Jun 07, 2018 11:36 am

Kognitio version 8.2.1 has been released for Hadoop and MapR.

The latest version is 8.2.1-rel180801, which replaces our previous download and can be obtained by visiting https://kognitio.com/getting-started/.

Instructions for upgrading existing clusters can be found here:
https://kognitio.com/documentation/late ... p-versions

and instructions for fresh installations are here:
https://kognitio.com/documentation/latest/index.html

New features in version 8.2.1 include:
* Reduced software dependencies -- Kognitio on Hadoop now only requires nodes to have Perl and some basic 64 bit system libraries/tools like bash, openssl libraries, etc. It does not need a 32 bit runtime any more. You should not need to install extra RPMs to run Kognitio any more.

* Reduced system preparation requirements -- Kognitio does not normally require users to perform any extra steps on the nodes in the Hadoop cluster in order to work (such as the /dev/shm adjustments in previous versions). Most users can now run Kognitio on unmodified Hadoop cluster nodes via Yarn.

* Automatic system management -- The software will now recover automatically from a wide range of failure scenarios such as Yarn container failures, node failures and software problems. Kognitio will create new containers automatically when required and will automatically restore the system to a functional state after problems occur.

* Improved diagnostics -- The software is now a lot better at spotting common issues (such as HDFS problems or lack of capacity to create Yarn containers) and reports these in a much clearer way than previous versions did.

* Connector improvements -- Kognitio's connectors have been upgraded to support running on Azure HDInsight, improve Parquet/ORC read performance and fix the problem with timestamp columns in Parquet files.

* Inclusion of a built-in libhdfs as a fallback for systems which don't have libhdfs installed.

* Improvements for automatic server management

* Numerous small fixes and improvements relating to customer reported issues.

Version 8.2.1 works best with an updated version of the 'kodoop extras' package (Not required on Hortonworks) which can be downloaded from here:
