Using the tab key to create indents in the code

by MikeAtkinson » Mon Nov 18, 2013 8:09 am

To indent a row or selection of rows:
  • Select some rows of text, press the tab key, those rows (including partially selected rows) are indented.
  • Position the cursor at the start of a row, press the tab key, that row is indented
  • Position the cursor before the first non-space character in a row, press the tab key, that row is indented
  • Position the cursor after a space within a row, press the tab key, a tab character is inserted.
To remove an indent on a row or selection of rows:
  • Select some rows of text, press the shift+tab keys, those rows are un-indented.
  • Position the cursor at the start of a row, press the shift+tab keys, that row is un-indented
  • Position the cursor before the first non-space character in a row, press the shift+tab keys, that row is un-indented
By default the text is indented 2 characters, this may be changed by the Configuration SQL "Use Tab to indent, Shift-Tab to outdent by:" option.

Tab is also used for Intellisense. After a partially completed keyword pressing Tab will either complete the keyword if there is only one alternative or bring up a box showing the possible completions. Intellisense may be turned off from the Configuration SQL pane.
