Getting started with Kognitio External Scripts

by skkirkham » Thu Jan 09, 2014 10:53 am

Hi all

Kognitio external scripting is particularly useful for more complex analytics/ data science /mining/manipulation tasks. Namely those not easily supported by Kognitio's rich SQL. External scripting allows you to invoke any programming language that runs under linux from within Kognitio. As this is a growing area of interest on the Kognitio forum we have decided to set up a dedicated section to accomodate any topics in this specific area.

General External Scripting is for any topics applicable to any language (such as external script admin) and we currently have dedicated sections for python and R topics. There is also a section for questions regarding other languages.

Over the next few weeks / months we will be trying to put out regular posts on how to get started using external scripts. Each pdf is bitesized and designed to explain one area of external scripting. The accompanying examples are simple analytic tasks so you can concentrate on learning Kognitio external scripting. More complex examples showing best practice for specific analytical or data science tasks will follow.

We assume that those interested in learning how to use external scripting have had some introduction into how it fits into the Kognitio system but for a brief intro (focussing on R) go to http://www.kognitio.com/mpp_r/.

If you have any specific requests or suggestions for topics to cover please do post them .

Getting started with Kognitio External Scripts: R version

by skkirkham » Wed Jan 29, 2014 10:38 am

Hi all

R is a great language for those wanting an open source, flexible framework for many types of stats and analytics. It has 1000s of maths and stats functions readily available via add on packages. Now you can learn how to turbo charge your R scripts by making use of Kognitio MPP in-memory code execution.

Parts 1 and 2 of the "Getting started with Kognitio external scripts" course is now available for R users. You can find an overview of these training modules here.

I've added a tutorial for setting up an external scripting environment for python - including installing the executable, editing config files and so on. It's available at http://www.kognitio.com/forums/Kognitio ... ing-A0.pdf
