Kognitio Version 8.0p Now Available; Added Functionality For Hadoop Integration, External Tables And External Functions
LONDON, 20 September 2012 — Kognitio, driving the convergence of Big Data, in-memory analytics and cloud computing, today announced the release of version 8.0p with extended connectivity capabilities. The company said the new version of its flagship software makes it possible for companies to gain unbridled access to data from multiple sources at a scale and speed previously impossible. This enables them to harness the explosive growth of data from day-to-day business operations, augmented by increasingly available and affordable third-party data sets.

The Kognitio Analytical Platform provides in-memory analytical capabilities that accelerate business intelligence tools by up to 1,000 times, while providing access to data at granular level. With version 8.0p, Kognitio sets the standard for access to data wherever it resides through the use of connectors, external tables and scripts.
Features Of The Latest Version Include:
- External tables: Linking directly to data with agents embedded in Apache™ Hadoop, the Kognitio Analytical Platform delivers analytics on rich data volumes, stored in a variety of data sources. This enables organizations to harness an “Information Anywhere™” approach to data analytics, regardless of where it resides, allowing business users to gain relevant insights in a fraction of the time required by conventional solutions. These “external tables“ can be created anonymously, allowing data source references to be incorporated into queries without the need for specialist knowledge or permissions. End users can create ad hoc queries simply with full data transparency.
- Hadoop Connector: This functionality joins the muscle of the Kognitio in-memory analytical capabilities with the immense scalability of Hadoop’s distributed file system (HDFS), delivering the ability to rapidly access massive amounts of data from multiple sources. Once that is accomplished, the information can be “pinned” into the Kognitio in-memory configuration, producing answers to complex queries within seconds. Filtering and projection activities can be moved to the connector held within Hadoop clusters, exploiting Hadoop strengths. A key feature of Kognitio is the ability to specify which data is required to match the local predicates before data is interrogated, improving speed of delivery and simplifying the resources required.
- External scripts – “beyond SQL”: The ability to be able to invoke scripts via external environments permits a simplification of workflow. Removing the need to move data back and forth between Kognitio and the script-hosting platform, delivers maximum efficiency to the transaction even as the entire process is controlled by standard SQL. This ensures the maximum utilization of resources.
“Kognitio has been a leader in in-memory analytical processing for more than a generation,” said Roger Gaskell, Kognitio chief technology officer. “Our latest version of the software meets the needs of today’s companies, for whom data is their very lifeblood. It also reflects the changing nature of how people access that information; where enterprise data warehouses were the norm just a short time ago, they have faded in importance with the emergence of Hadoop-based implementations. Kognitio powers the performance at the glass that today’s users require to get the time-sensitive answers they need to compete.”
