What is Kognitio on AWS?

Kognitio’s analytical engine is being used on-premise by enterprises such as AIMIA, Bet365, BT and Scottish Power, to allow high-speed, concurrent SQL to be run against their data. It is now available on AWS without the up-front platform and licence costs of an on-premise solution. The software integrates seamlessly with S3 storage and AWS Glue. The software also enables data science workloads at scale by allowing code written in Python / R / other languages to be executed in parallel against data from within SQL queries. To try the Kognitio software in AWS with no up-front hardware or software licence costs:

  • Subscribe to the Kognitio software – no costs incurred at this point.
  • Initiate Kognitio launcher which uses a single, low cost instance to control deployment and management of Kognitio clusters.
  • Start clusters of EC2 nodes running Kognitio software – this is the point at which costs are incurred, according to your data volumes, performance requirements, etc., and the launcher will provide information on costing for your requirements.

Kognitio on AWS Architecture

Kognitio on AWS in controlled via a launcher AWS instance, which is accessed from a web browser. The launcher is used to initiate clusters of AWS EC2 instances, and manage them, as shown below. The launcher allows users to specify the number and type of EC2 instances to use, based on data volumes and performance requirements.

How much will it cost?

The launcher shows pricing for a cluster before you launch it, as you can see below. As a very rough guide, expect the Kognitio software cost to be the same as the AWS EC2 on-demand cost for the nodes. Note that spot pricing is supported in the Advanced options to reduce the EC2 cost.

How easy is it to access data in S3 and other formats?

It’s pretty straightforward. For example, to access some Amazon Customer Review data in freely accessible S3 buckets, you can just run the following SQL “out of the box”, then query the resulting table:

create external table reviews from s3_parquet target ‘uri_location s3://amazon-reviews-pds, uri_path /parquet/, fmt_filename_partitions product_category, repeatable_results yes, ignore_invalid_records 1‘

Web support gives you access to the customer support portal. You can submit support cases for Kognitio at any time. The portal also gives access to a set of solutions, which can help resolve common problems. In particular there are troubleshooting solutions which take you through decision trees to determine the cause of things like performance issues. With basic web support there is no guaranteed response time. You also have access to the Community Support forum.
